AICAD announces recipients of the 2020/21 Post-Graduate Teaching Fellowship

The Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD) is pleased to announce the five Fellows who have recently been selected to participate in a year-long, Post-Graduate Teaching Fellowship at participating AICAD institutions during the 2020/21 academic year. Additionally, eleven of the 2019/20 fellows will be continuing in their positions for a second year.
The Fellowship program seeks to provide professional practice opportunities to high-achieving alumni who have recently graduated from AICAD member schools, while also increasing the racial and ethnic diversity of faculty at these institutions. AICAD institutions aspire to create a climate that recognizes and values diversity as central to excellence in art and design education.
AICAD Fellowships include structured and unstructured mentoring and professional development opportunities along with direct teaching experience, health benefits, and other monetary supports.

New Fellows:
Aasawari Kulkarni (MFA, Graphic Design, 2020, Maryland Institute College of Art) placed at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Before pursuing her master’s degree, Aasawari previously worked at Pentagram New York and at the Indian Type Foundry, Ahmedabad. Her interests lay in the intersection of human behavior and culture, with design. Aasawari also writes poetry, which often translates in her work in unusual ways.
Gabriela Escovar (MFA, Experimental Animation, 2019, California Institute of the Arts) placed at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Frequently drawing from her experiences as a first-generation Mexican-American woman, Gabriela’s work aims to highlight bodies often overlooked in the media. Through referencing her culture, the body-positive movement, and feminism, she hopes to highlight the complexities of womanhood as it intertwines with cultural identity.
Zuhal Feraidon (MFA, Painting, 2019, Rhode Island School of Design) placed at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Zuhal’s artistic interest explores community and social identity in relation to the environment, dealing with the politics of representation. Her work has been exhibited at Monya Rowe Gallery, The Red Eye Gallery, Sol Koffler Gallery, The Ruffin Gallery, and IX Art Park among others, and has been featured in publications such The University of Edinburgh’s “The Dangerous Women Project”.
Yeon Jee (MPS, Design Management, 2019, Pratt Institute) placed at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Valedictorian of her graduate class, Yeon received the Excellence in Academic Achievement award and was named the Graduate Commencement Speaker for the class of 2019. Upon completing her degree, Yeon started teaching at Pratt Institute while working as a footwear design freelancer for companies in New York including Madewell and Caleres.
Rodrigo Carazas Portal (MFA, Curatorial Practice, 2020, Maryland Institute College of Art) placed at Kansas City Art Institute.. Rodrigo Carazas Portal was born in Lima and studied at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima, before relocating to the US in 2009. As an artist and curator, Carazas Portal’s work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the U.S., Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Chile, Canada, and Spain.
